Argolic Gulf
The Argolic Gulf ( Greek Αργολικός κόλπος Argolikos kolpos ) is a bay of the Myrtoic Sea , a marginal sea of the Mediterranean . It is located east of the Peloponnese peninsula , between the Argolis east, after which it is named, and the Arcadian - Laconic coast in the west. At its northern end the river Inachos flows from the plain around Argos into the Argolic Gulf, the largest settlement on its coast is the former Greek capital Nafplio ; a well-known seaside resort on its eastern coast is Tolo . The Lerna archaeological site is one of the oldest documented settlement sites in ancient Greece on the west coast of the Gulf.
In the Argolic Gulf there are some smaller, uninhabited islands (including Bourtzi , Romvi , Platia and Psili ), the largest and only inhabited is Spetses at its southeast end. Spetses and the other islands around the Argolic Peninsula, which administratively all belong to the prefecture of Piraeus , are grouped together with the islands of the Saronic Gulf under the term Argosaronic Islands ( Greek Νησιά του Αργοσαρωνικού Nisia tou Argosaronikou ).
