Myrtoic Sea

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Myrtoic Sea ( Greek Μυρτώο Πέλαγος Myrtóo Pélagos ) is a tributary of the Aegean Sea in the European Mediterranean . It is located between the Peloponnese peninsula and the western Cyclades . The Saronic Gulf joins to the north, the Cretan Sea to the south , the Argolic Gulf forms the western branch of the sea.

The name of the sea is said to be derived from the Greek charioteer Myrtilos , whom Pelops plunged into this sea. The name is also traced back to a girl named Myrto.

On the northern edge of the Myrtoic Sea are the islands of Spetses and Hydra and the uninhabited island of Dokos , which belong to the Attica region . At the entrance to the Saronic Gulf is the island of Agios Georgios . Approximately in the middle of the sea there are three small, uninhabited islands: Falkonera , Karavi and Velopoula .
