geology
The transition from the Cretan Sea to the Libyan Sea occurs through the straits of Kithira (Stenon Kithron) in the west and the Strait of Kasos (Stnon Kasu) in the east. the seabed is part of the Aegean Plate . South of Crete, the African plate pushes under it, so that it still belongs to the subduction zone and is shaken relatively frequently by earthquakes. The Minoan eruption last led to violent tsunamis around 3600 years ago , which may have contributed to the demise of the Minoan culture .
