geography
Geographical location
Sitia is the rural center of the region in the Lasithi prefecture, which is characterized by extensive olive cultivation . Tourist offers are primarily limited to the harbor promenade, which is why the city was one of the few larger towns on Crete that was able to maintain its typical character. The new Sitia international airport , which is located on a plateau above the city and which was due to open in summer 2004, is now served by many European airports.
Sitia is the end of the European route 75 .
Community structure
The municipality of Sitia is divided into four municipal districts. These are the independent municipalities of Itanos, Lefki and Sitia, which existed until 2010, and the new municipality of Analipsi. Local self-government is exercised by a municipality (gr. Dimotiki kinotita ), namely Sitia, and 29 local communities topikes kinotites . In November 2011, four local communities from the municipality of Ierapetra were incorporated into Sitia, but initially not assigned to any of the municipal districts.
The following table also shows settlements with more than 400 inhabitants (population figures from the results of the 2011 census).

history
Archaeological finds prove a settlement since around 1050 BC. According to Diogenes Laertios , Sitia was the hometown of Myson , one of the Seven Wise Men . Excavations in the area ( Agia Fotia , Praisos ) show that the bay was settled in Minoan and Hellenistic times. Venetians laid out the city, which can still be seen today in the streets arranged at right angles. After the city and fortress were destroyed in the 17th century, reconstruction only began again in the middle of the 19th century.
The city's most famous son is the poet Vitsentzos Kornaros , who wrote the verse novel Erotokritos . The work is considered to be the most important of early modern Cretan literature.
Attractions
Museums
One of the sights is the Archaeological Museum Sitia , where finds from the excavation sites of Eastern Crete are shown. Objects from the Neolithic to Roman times are exhibited, mainly from Kato Zakros . The most famous exhibit in the museum is the kouros from Palaikastro .
The Venetian castle Kasarma , originally built by the Crusaders , rebuilt and expanded during the Venetian occupation of the island, was destroyed by its owners in 1651 so that it would not fall into the hands of the Turks. It is at the highest point in the city.
The folklore museum shows traditional household appliances and work tools as well as products from local handicraft production.
