Festos ( Greek Φαιστός ( m. Sg. )) Is a municipality (Δήμος, Dimos ) in the southwest of the regional district of Heraklion on the Greek Mediterranean island of Crete . The island forms one of the 13 regions of Greece .
The municipality of Festos was formed by merging the municipalities and current municipalities of Tymbaki , Mires and Zaros on the basis of the Kallikratis law from 2010. The seat of the municipality is the small town of Mires . The community was named after the Phaistos archaeological site .
structure
Since January 1, 2011, Festos has been divided into three municipal districts and 26 local units. These units, which are designated as urban district (dimotiki kinotita) or local community (topiki kinotita) depending on the number of inhabitants , elect their own local representatives. The population figures come from the results of the 2011 census.
