Mires ( Greek Μοίρες ( f. Pl. )) Is the largest city of the fertile Messara plain on Crete with 6379 inhabitants . It is the administrative seat of the municipality of Festos .

The weekly market in the agricultural town of Mires is the largest in the region. The city is located on a busy country road that crosses Crete from Heraklion to Tymbaki on the south coast in a north-south direction.

Until 2010, Mires was an independent municipality, which with its suburbs comprised around 10,600 inhabitants on an area of 182 km², was raised to a municipal municipality (dimos) in 1949 and was last significantly enlarged in 1997 by incorporating numerous neighboring municipalities.

On January 1, Mires was absorbed into the newly created Festos community, where it has since formed one of three districts.

Cape Lithino ( Greek Ακρωτήρι Λίθινο ) and the small port town of Kali Limenes (Καλοί Λιμένες), the southernmost of the island of Crete, belong to the area of Mires .

The Agiofarango Gorge , which opens to the Libyan Sea between the cape and port , has become a destination for day trips.

Because of the remoteness of the gorge, it had become the home of Christian hermits from the early Middle Ages onwards, who supposedly only gathered once a year for worship in the chapel of Agios Andonis at the lower end of the gorge.

The last construction phase of the chapel - the transept - was probably completed in the 14th or 15th century.
