José Ignacio Gutiérrez Cataluña (born December 1, 1977 in Valencia ) is a former Spanish cyclist .

Career

José Ignacio Gutiérrez began his professional career in 2000 with the small Portuguese cycling team LA-Pecol , after he had previously been on the road for the youth team of the Kelme team . For the 2002 season Gutiérrez was finally taken under contract by the Kelme professional team, where he was mainly used as a helper for his respective team captains. In May 2003 he contested his first three-week tour of the country with the Giro d'Italia and finished the race in 39th place overall. Shortly thereafter, he was also at the start of the Tour de France's 100th birthday , but had to leave the tour after the seventh stage. At the end of the season, his contract with Kelme was not renewed.

In 2004 Gutiérrez then went back to the amateur field at Caja Castilla La Mancha and won stages at the Vuelta a Extremadura , the Circuito Montañés and the GP Vila-Real . In the latter round, he even won the overall ranking.

He then moved to the Swiss racing team Phonak , where he again participated in his first season in the Giro d'Italia and for the first time in the Vuelta a España . In 2006 his name was mentioned in the doping scandal Fuentes , so it was still unclear for a long time whether he would be allowed to drive next year. Gutiérrez was not suspended and was able to continue his career with the Italian team LPR in 2007 after the Phonak racing team dissolved . At the end of the season he ended his active career.
