The 86th Giro d'Italia took place between May 10th and June 1st, 2003. The cyclists covered a total of 3,408.5 kilometers from the start of the tour in Lecce to the traditional destination in Milan . The winner of the overall standings was the Italian Gilberto Simoni with over 7 minutes ahead of his compatriot Garzelli .
