The 86th Giro d'Italia took place between May 10th and June 1st, 2003. The cyclists covered a total of 3,408.5 kilometers from the start of the tour in Lecce to the traditional destination in Milan . The winner of the overall standings was the Italian Gilberto Simoni with over 7 minutes ahead of his compatriot Garzelli .

There were 21 stages , including 2 individual time trials and 5 mountain arrivals . The two highest points were climbed during the 18th stage. The Colle di Esischie has a height of 2366 m and was therefore the summit of this Giros. The second highest mountain was the Colli di Sampeyre with 2284 m height. The stage ended with a mountain arrival at an altitude of 1815 m. This stage was undoubtedly the queen stage, which Dario Frigo won with a 10 second lead over the then leader and later winner Simoni, who significantly increased his lead over other opponents through this stage. He has increased his lead over the runner-up from under 2 minutes to over 7 minutes.

With 7 wins the Italian Petacchi won the most stages, who wore a total of 6 stages over the pink jersey . In addition to the winner, only the second-placed Garzelli could wear this jersey for 3 days.
