Giro d'Italia 1999
The 82nd Giro d'Italia was held in 22 stages from May 15 to June 6, 1999 and was won by Ivan Gotti from Bergamo .
After the race was initially characterized by the duel between Laurent Jalabert and Marco Pantani , Pantani won the mountain finish of the 19th stage in Alpe di Pampeago by a large margin, so that he also led the overall standings by a large margin. Due to an increased hematocrit value , Pantani was excluded from the race after the 20th stage. The later overall winner Gotti took the overall lead on the mountainous 21st stage with a second place.
