Scoring (Giro d'Italia)
The points evaluation of the Giro d'Italia has been held since 1966. The driver who collects the most points during all stages wins. The points are awarded for the placement at the finish as well as for intermediate sprints during the stage.
For the first time at the Giro d'Italia in 1967, a red leadership jersey was used for the points classification introduced in 1966. From 1970 to 2009, the leader was awarded the Maglia Ciclamino (Italian, German: cyclamen or alpine violet jersey) in the points classification. In 2010, the organizers returned to a stronger shade of red, which is more differentiated from the jersey of the leader in the overall standings, the Maglia Rosa , and Maglia Rossa (German red jersey, 2010 and 2011: Maglia Rosso Passione , German literally: "Red passion jersey", meaning: "Heart passion jersey"). For the Giro d'Italia 2017 , the organizers returned to the Maglia Ciclamino .
The first winner of the points classification of the Giro d'Italia was the Italian Gianni Motta . The two Italians Giuseppe Saronni and Francesco Moser each won the rating four times and therefore most often.
