The 100th Giro d'Italia took place from May 5th to 28th, 2017 . The stage race started in Alghero on Sardinia and ended in Milan . The bike race was part of the UCI WorldTour 2017 . The winner was Tom Dumoulin from the Netherlands .

Participating teams

The 18 UCI WorldTeams of the 2017 season were automatically eligible to start. In addition, the organizer RCS Sport granted four participation authorizations ( wild cards ) to UCI Professional Continental Teams , the second class of cycling teams. These included two of the four Italian professional teams.

Each line-up could consist of nine athletes, so that the field of drivers for the Giro d'Italia 2017 could consist of a total of 198 athletes. However, two teams did not start with the maximum number of drivers: the Astana Pro Team declared, out of respect for the fatally injured Michele Scarponi , not to nominate any driver, and the Bardiani CSF team , Stefano Pirazzi and Nicola Ruffoni , who were suspended on suspicion of doping , were not replaced .

Regulations

The leader of the overall ranking wears the Maglia Rosa . As always in international stage races, the overall ranking was determined by adding up the times driven. In addition, there were 10, 6 and 4 seconds time bonuses in the stages - apart from the time trial stages - and 3, 2 and 1 second in the second intermediate sprint of a stage.

For drivers born after January 1, 1992, the junior ranking was awarded on this basis, the leader of which was awarded the Maglia Bianca .

The leader of the points classification wore the Maglia Ciclamino . For this evaluation, between 50 and 1 point were awarded for the first 15 riders for flat stages, between 25 and 1 point for the first 10 for medium-difficult stages and between 15 and 1 point for the first 10 riders for mountain stages and time trials. In intermediate sprints, between 20 and 1 point were awarded for the first 8 riders on flat stages, between 10 and 1 point for the first 5 riders on medium-difficulty stages and between 8 and 1 point for the first 3 riders on mountain stages.

The leader in the mountain classification wore the Maglia Azzurra . Points were awarded on the Cima Coppi between 45 and 1 point for the first 9, on mountains of the 1st category between 35 and 1 point for the first 8, on mountains of the second category between 15 and 1 for the first 6, on climbs third category between 7 and 1 point for the first 4 and, if the fourth category climbs, between 3 and 1 points for the first 3 riders. When reaching the mountains, between 15 and 2 points were awarded to the first five drivers

There were also two team ratings . The Winning Team rating was a rating that resulted from adding up the times of day of the three best drivers in the team. The Super Team rating was the result of points awarded for the top positions of the drivers of a team in the stages and intermediate sprints, between 50 and 1 point for the first fifteen in the stages and between 8 and 1 point for the first five in the intermediate sprints.

There were also the following special prices:

  • Intermediate sprint scoring : On every stage (except time trial) the first five drivers received 10, 6, 3, 2 and one point in the intermediate sprints.
  • Outlier evaluation : The winner was the driver who had been active in outlier groups the longest (in a group of a maximum of ten drivers) in the entire race.
  • Most combative driver : At the finish line, the intermediate sprints and every mountain classification, points were awarded for this classification. The number of counters did not correspond to the points otherwise awarded there.
  • Fair play rating : The basis for this rating was a points system in which the aim was to collect as few points as possible. For example, a fine was converted into one penalty point for every 10 Swiss francs, time penalties resulted in two points per second.

The originally planned inclusion of a special rating for the best downhill skier was given up after criticism from the driver's circle.

The overall winner received 205,668 euros, the second 108,412 euros and the third 48,801 euros (each from two pots of prize money). A stage win brought in 11,010 euros, a day in the Maglia Rosa 1000 euros. The victory in the points classification was rewarded with 10,000 euros, the mountain classification with 5,000. In the team rankings, the respective winners received 5,000 euros each.

doping

After testing positive for a derivative of prohibited growth hormones , Stefano Pirazzi and Nicola Ruffoni from the Professional Continental Team Bardiani CSF were temporarily banned by the UCI on suspicion of doping one day before the start of the race. Bardiani then suspended the two drivers, which is why, contrary to what was planned, they will not take part in the tour.
