Tortolì is a city on the Italian Mediterranean island of Sardinia with 11,093 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). Until 2016 it was the capital of the province of Ogliastra , which was then merged with the province of Nuoro .

Geography and traffic

There is a port in the suburb of Arbatax . Until 2011, one of the four airports in Sardinia was located near the city . The city is shaped by tourism . This region of Sardinia is known for the particularly beautiful coasts and beaches with very clear sea water. From a geological point of view, the beach of Cea is particularly interesting for its red porphyry rocks and basalt intrusions.

Tortoli has a train station on the narrow-gauge Mandas – Arbatax line , which is served by Trenino Verde in the summer months .

Attractions

One of the sights of the city is the church of Sant'Andrea Apostolo, once a cathedral , in the Baroque style . The first church on this site was from the 6th century . Another attraction is the 16th century watch tower of San Gemiliano. The S'Ortali 'e su Monti site is located south of Tortoli . It is the location of a nuraghe , a giant grave and a row of stones .
