The sagra

The sagra of San Mauro is the most important in Sorgono. The festival, always celebrated on the last Sunday in May, was postponed from 2005 to the first week in September.

The Palio de San Mauro is one of the events of the festival . A track and arena for horse racing were built at the foot of the hill dominated by the church. Sardinian chants and dances in the village square, tasting of the local agricultural products, buying handicraft products (glass, leather, ceramics) and exhibitions about the pilgrimage church and the old traditions are part of it.

In the first half of the 20th century, the festival was divided into three parts:

  • In January, the festival “San Mauro die dolori” (San Mauro of Sorrows) was celebrated. This festival was dedicated to those suffering from rheumatism.
  • The day after Easter Monday “San Mauro dei fiori” (flowers) was celebrated
  • At the end of May, “San Mauro Prospero” was celebrated, a festival of thanks for the farmers in the village.

Until the middle of the 20th century, the festival of San Mauro lasted nine days. On this occasion three days were devoted to a market for cattle, horses and sheep that attracted breeders from all over the island.

The neighboring communities are Atzara , Austis , Belvì , Neoneli ( OR ), Ortueri , Samugheo ( OR ), Tiana and Tonara .
