Trenino Verde (German: little green train) is a tourism project of the Italian railway company Ferrovie della Sardegna .

After the Sardinian branch lines became increasingly unprofitable, regular passenger traffic had to be discontinued on several routes in the 1990s. The Trenino Verde project was created under the popular name of the railway and a seasonal excursion service. In the summer season, the Trenino Verde trains operate on the following routes:

At the end of the 2014 summer season, on September 28th, the Sardinian government intended to shut down all traffic after two derailments in order to save annual route maintenance costs of EUR 7 million. As a result, all trips from October onwards were canceled in 2014. For the summer of 2015, another EUR 4 million in operating aid was made available and journeys are again taking place. However, around EUR 120 million would have to be spent on rehabilitating the lines.

In June 2016, stress tests were carried out on the bridges between Seui and Niala, after which the Seui – Arbatax route approval was withdrawn. Opinions on the reasons for the shutdown vary widely. The parties involved (government, railway operator, mayor of the railway stations) hold each other responsible for the deficiencies. Given the facts, it is not foreseeable that the route will be reopened anytime soon. Information can only be found sporadically on the Internet on the homepage.
