The Isili – Sorgono railway is a narrow-gauge branch line on the island of Sardinia in Italy . Only in the summer months from June to September there is passenger traffic under the name Trenino Verde .

history

simplified elevation profile of the route

The Sardinian railway company Strade Ferrate Secondarie della Sardegna began construction in 1888 and was able to start continuous traffic to Cagliari in December of the following year . In 1921 the newly founded railway company Ferrovie Complementari della Sardegna took over the traffic.

Towards the end of the last century, the financing of rail transport became increasingly problematic. Ferrovie della Sardegna has been operating the branch lines in Sardinia since 1989 , when a number of regular connections fell victim to the savings in 1997. Since then, only the Trenino Verde has been a tourist attraction in the summer months. The Sardinian government wants to completely stop operations for cost reasons ( as of 2014 ).
