Fonni is the highest mountain village in Sardinia (1000 m).

The place with 3834 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) is in the province of Nuoro in the Italian region of Sardinia . The painted pilgrimage church of Madonna dei Martiri has a historical picture of the Madonna that is carried through the streets at the traditional costume festival Sagra della Madonna dei Martiri (the former occasion was transhumance celebrations ) in June.

Fonni is 33 km south of Nuoro .

The neighboring communities are: Desulo , Gavoi , Lodine , Mamoiada , Orgosolo , Ovodda and Villagrande Strisaili ( OG ).

The giant tombs of Bidistili and Madau are as close to Fonni as the nuragic settlement of Gremonu and the menhirs of San Michele Urrui and the nuraghe Dronnoro.
