Superclasico
The game between the football clubs Boca Juniors and River Plate is called Superclásico ( the Superderby ) . The two most popular Argentine clubs come from the capital Buenos Aires . The encounter between the two clubs, together with the Glasgow derby Old Firm, is probably the best-known city derbythe sports world. The encounter is particularly important for fans of both camps. It is seen by fans as the struggle between the two social classes - the working class (Boca) and the middle and upper classes (River). Due to violent actions by the fans, the derby often makes inglorious headlines.
backgrounds
The two clubs come from the capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires. Originally the two clubs have the same origins, the port of La Boca , which was founded by Italian immigrants. When River Plate moved to the wealthy Núñez district in the 1930s , the great rivalry arose. From then on, the River fans were considered the rich and the club was nicknamed Los Millonarios , the Boca supporters as the poor, although both fan camps are now recruited from all social classes. The Boca Juniors have remained loyal to the workers' town of La Boca, where the club was founded in 1905 by Italian immigrants, to this day.
The Superclásicos put all of Argentina in a state of emergency. Lively discussions about the Derby are in pubs, offices and television programs. The interest extends far beyond the state capital. From distant Patagonia to the Andes, the Superclásico is a hot topic and the starting point for emotional disputes between fan camps.
The city derby also receives a lot of attention in Europe. The Superclásico ranks first in a list of the most exciting sporting events in the world, compiled by the English weekly magazine The Observer .
The explosiveness of this city derby results primarily from the 1920s to 1940s. At the time, the two clubs dominated Argentine football. Despite the success of some other Argentine clubs, the encounter between River and Boca is still the game of games in Argentine football to this day.
In 1907 a decision game for the club colors is said to have taken place between the two rival clubs. River Plate won and was allowed to wear the colors red and white from then on. Boca Juniors had to switch to blue and yellow. These were the colors of a Swedish ship that was at the time in the port of La Boca.
The first official Superclásico took place on August 24, 1913. River won 2-1. The game was played on the Racing Club sports field .
The first Superclásico in Argentine professional football occurred on September 20, 1931. The teams separated 1: 1 in the Boca Juniors stadium.
Alfredo Di Stéfano was the only coach who managed to win the Argentine championship with both clubs. First he won the national championship with the Boca Juniors in 1969. In 1981 he won the title again, this time with archenemy River Plate.
Fans
The Superclásicos are a great spectacle mainly because of the fans. The atmosphere in the stadium is deafening during the game. In Argentina, around 40% consider themselves to be Boca fans, and around 30% name River as their favorite club. The Boca supporters are more likely to be assigned to the working class, while River Plate fans come to a large extent from the middle and upper classes. Therefore, the Superclásicos are also considered a struggle between the two social classes in Buenos Aires and across the country.
The River supporters refer to the Boca fans as "Bosteros". They are alluding to the former city servants of the same name who were responsible for collecting horse droppings. Conversely, the Bocas call the red and whites “cowards”. They call them "Gallinas" ( chickens ).
Both clubs have large fan organizations. That of the Bocas is called “ La Doce ” ( the twelfth man ), that of River Plate is “Los Borrachos del Tablón” ( The drunkards from the bar ).
violence
Again and again the violent acts of the fans were in the foreground at Superclásicos. The particular explosiveness of the duels and the associated emotions and the released energy of the fans increased again and again into violent acts.
The Boca supporters in particular presented themselves as the pacemaker of extreme fan violence. Miguel Barrita became particularly well known. The late Barrita was the leader of the Boca fan movement "La Doce". He was called "El Abuelo" ( the grandfather ) by the Bocas . He was feared for his iron and ruthless regime. The River fan organization "Los Borrachos del Tablón" is also considered to be extremely violent.
On June 23, 1968, the worst tragedy in Argentine football occurred at a Superclásico in El Monumental . After the game (final score 0-0) 74 people died and over 150 were injured. One exit of the stadium was locked and the crowds kept trying to leave the stadium. The mass panic was triggered by the Boca fans. They had thrown burning newspapers into the crowd. The incident could never be fully resolved in court. No one has been convicted of their violent conduct.
In April 1994, Boca leader Miguel Barrita is said to have ordered the murder of two River fans after a 2-0 defeat in the Superclásico. The cynical comment from a hooded Boca supporter on TV was simply: "Empatamos" (We have equalized). Subsequently, this remark could be found as graffiti in the city.
In 1996, two other River fans were murdered. These murders are also attributed to Miguel Barrita, who is said to have commissioned them.
In 1997 River fans stole the famous flags of the Boca fans during a Superclásico in La Bombonera . Many Boca fans justify violent attacks on River fans with this action.
In 2002 a 14-year-old boy was killed at the Superclásico. After that, however, the situation calmed down. The players of both clubs called on their supporters for "peace in the stadiums".
After the violent riots before the final second leg of the Copa Libertadores 2018, when the Boca Juniors team bus was attacked with stones and several players suffered injuries, the game was moved to Madrid and thus abroad for the first time.
Playing styles
Boca Juniors versus River Plate is also mythified as the clash of two different ways of playing. While the River fans expect ball artists in their ranks, the Boca fans are looking to acquire battle-inspired players.
River Plate's game is traditionally characterized by show. The opponent should be tunnelled, the players should always present new tricks on the field that amaze the whole world of football. River's game should look elegant overall. Another philosophy of the red-whites is to continue playing the ball directly. This has already become a trademark for the club.
At the Boca Juniors, however, they rely on fighting spirit. Boca fans refer to River players as “dancers who run out of breath when the game is male.” The fans expect sacrifice, tenacity and courage from their kickers.
