Francisco Antonio Varallo (born February 5, 1910 in La Plata , † August 30, 2010 ibid) was an Argentine football player . He died as the last participant in the Football World Cup in 1930 . It was also called Cañoncito ( small cannon ) because of its many gates .
Career
society
Francisco Varallo began his career in the youth team of 12 de Octubre in his hometown of La Plata . A trial session at Estudiantes de La Plata was unsuccessful because his youth club 12 de Octubre refused to give it up. After he was able to assert himself at Gimnasia de La Plata and showed consistently appealing performances, he was called up in 1930 by the Argentine national coach Juan José Tramutola in the squad for the following football World Cup in 1930 . After the World Cup in 1930 Varallo moved to the Boca Juniors , with whom he was able to celebrate many successes in the following years. He won the Primera División three times with Boca and scored a total of 181 league goals in nine years with Boca. This record was only broken in 2009 by Martín Palermo .
National team
During the 1930 World Cup, the attacker played four games for the Argentines and scored his only goal in the second group game against Mexico. In the semifinals he was out due to an injury, he could be used again in the final against Uruguay. The Argentine team led 2-1 goals against the hosts at halftime. In the second half, however, Argentina slacked off to Varallo and lost the game 2: 4. For the 1934 World Cup, Varallo was not called up and in 1938 Argentina could not qualify for the finals. With Argentina he won the Copa America in 1937 . He scored three goals in the course of the tournament and was the team's second-best goalscorer.
