Walter Tralau (born October 10, 1904 in Bad Segeberg , † December 30, 1975 in Cologne ) was a German architect and construction clerk . As a student at the Bauhaus in Dessau , he was a personal student of Walter Gropius . He is the father of the artist and gallery owner Marianne Tralau .

Life

Walter Tralau was born in Segeberg in Holstein on 1904 as the second son of the railway assistant Friedrich Tralau. His father died very early in 1906. Tralau wanted to become a painter and architect, but had to learn to be a carpenter for financial reasons . In addition to his apprenticeship, he attended the Hamburg State Technical College until 1925. He passed the final exam with distinction. He also worked as a technician in a construction business to get additional funds for his studies.

He worked for a year as an architect at Heimstätte Schleswig-Holstein. He then began his studies at the Bauhaus in Dessau . In the first semester he was taken over by the director of the Bauhaus, Walter Gropius , in his private studio, where he remained until 1929. In addition, he continued to attend lectures at the Bauhaus. Until 1930 he was the office manager of the architect Otto Haesler in Celle . There he worked on larger settlement projects in Celle, Kassel and Leipzig. He left the architectural office to start his own business - without the desired success. In 1929 Tralau married Elly Krahn and they had three children together.

From 1930 to 1934 Walter Tralau worked as an architect at the Hamburg Oberpostdirektion , organized the copper house construction department of the Hirsch copper and brass works under the direction of Walter Gropius and then worked for Hans Schwippert in Aachen .

In the spring of 1934 Tralau took over the design department of the construction department of the Ernst Heinkel Flugzeugwerke in Rostock - Marienehe . As a representative of the chief architect, Herbert Rimpl , numerous buildings and parts of the factory were built. He then received the order to build two large estates for the Heinkel works in Berlin and Oranienburg ( White City ) and the Leegebruch settlement .

As a teenager, Tralau was blind in the right eye and was therefore exempt from military service.

Together with Herbert Rimpl (now as branch manager and authorized signatory), residential buildings were built for the Reichswerke Hermann Göring in Watenstedt-Salzgitter. Around 12,000 apartments with schools, sales houses, shops, pharmacies and other buildings.

After the end of the war and due to the discontinuation of construction projects in the Salzgitter area, Walter Tralau took over the management of the building department of the city of Cologne on the recommendation of Hans Schwippert. Until his retirement he headed various building authorities in Cologne. Walter Tralau died in Cologne on December 30, 1975, just four years after his wife Elly.
