In his youth, Robert Cherro, born in Barracas , a district of Buenos Aires , often referred to as Cherro by many , played at the Barracas-based club Sportivo Barracas . In 1924, the then 17-year-old was accepted into the professional squad. After a year at Sportivo, he moved on to Ferro Carril Oeste in 1925 , a club that was one of the best in Argentina at the time. Again just a year later he received an offer from Boca Juniors , which he of course accepted. With the club from the poor La Boca district , Cherro won his first championship in his first season. That season he was also the top scorer in the Argentine League . He was able to repeat this feat in 1928 and 1930. At the Boca Juniors, a team was formed in the late 1920s that would dominate Argentine football in the early 1930s. In addition to Cherro, other greats of the time such as Pedro Suárez , Francisco Varallo , Domingo Tarasconi and Ludovico Bidoglio also played in La Boca. The team won their next championship in 1930, followed by their title defense in 1931. Cherro was again champion with Boca Juniors in 1934 and the following year. Three years later, Cherro retired at the age of 31.

Roberto Cherro came between 1926 and 1937 to 16 missions in the Argentine national football team . At the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928 he was there, but failed with his team in the final against Uruguay . A year later, the gauchos won the Copa America . In the 1929 tournament, Cherro scored a goal in the game against Paraguay (final score: 4: 1). Another year later, Cherro was nominated by national coach Francisco Olazar for the soccer World Cup in Uruguay . The Argentines played a good tournament, reaching the final by winning against France , Mexico , Chile and the USA . There, however, Uruguay was a size too big in the Estadio Centenario . The Celeste won the duel between the two rivals from the Río de la Plata 4-2. Cherro himself was only used once in the course of the tournament, in the 1-0 in the first game against France.

On February 5, 1933, Cherro, actually a midfielder, scored all four goals in a 4-1 win against reigning world champions Uruguay. Cherro ended his international career after 16 appearances (13 goals) in 1937.
