Johann Haberstich

Johann Haberstich (born June 16, 1824 in Oberentfelden , † March 6, 1891 in Aarau ; resident in Oberentfelden) was a Swiss politician . He represented the canton of Aargau in the Council of States three times ; 1851/52, 1866/67 and from 1886 to 1890. He was also a member of the National Council from 1872 to 1881 .

biography

The son of the community clerk Johannes Haberstich graduated from the canton school in Aarau . He then studied law at the Universities of Heidelberg and Berlin . In 1846 Haberstich received the patent as a lawyer , three years later as a notary . He ran a law firm in Aarau , he was also a judge at the district court from 1848 to 1858 (from 1852 as vice-president) and from 1860 a substitute judge at the Aargau higher court. In the military he rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel .

Haberstich was elected to the Grand Council in 1849 , to which he belonged until 1852 and again from 1860 until his death. He was president of the Grand Council four times (1861/62, 1866/67, 1870/71 and 1881/82) and was considered one of the most influential radical-liberal politicians. Since it was founded in 1854, he has been a member of the board of directors and the board of directors of Aargauische Bank (today's Kantonalbank ) and in 1880 took over the presidency from the late Carl Feer-Herzog . From 1880 he was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Swiss Northeast Railway and the Gotthard Railway .

Haberstich was also politically active at the national level: in 1851 and 1852 the Grand Council delegated him to the Council of States for the first time , and in 1866 and 1867 he again represented his canton in the smaller parliamentary chamber. In the parliamentary elections in 1872 he was elected to the National Council, of which he was a member until 1881. Haberstich advocated more centralism and helped draft the Code of Obligations that came into force in 1883 . In 1886 he was elected to the Council of States for the third time, but had to resign in 1890 for health reasons.

Johann Haberstich was married to Rosina Elisabeth Holzach von Basel in his first marriage and to Anna Maria Lüthy von Schöftland in his second marriage.
