description

La Boca emerged at the end of the 19th century as a quarter of Italian immigrants, most of whom were employed as industrial workers. Many of the first inhabitants came from the Italian port city of Genoa . In 1882, after a long general strike , La Boca broke away from Argentina and the rebels hoisted the Genoese flag , which was immediately taken down by the then Argentine President Julio Argentino Roca .

Today La Boca is popular with tourists , also because of its original houses. They were built from the sheet metal of broken ships and painted in bright colors with marine paint. Many artists advertise their works on the sidewalks of El Caminito Street (The Little Path).

La Boca is also known for the La Bombonera football stadium (Spanish: "box of chocolates") of the Boca Juniors football club . It owes its colors (yellow and blue) to a Swedish ship that passed when it was founded.

Other attractions in the area include La Ribera theater, tango halls and Italian restaurants. The Italian influence can still be felt in everyday life.
