Location of Colegiales in Buenos Aires

Colegiales is a district in the north of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires and is located between Avenidas Álvarez Thomas , Forest , De los Incas , Virrey del Pino , Cabildo , Jorge Newbery , Crámer and Dorrego . The district is about 2.3 km² and has 57,000 inhabitants (as of 2001).

history

The history of Colegiales is the same as that of the Chacarita neighborhood , as the area was originally called Chacarita de los Colegiales. It got its name from the Jesuits who went on excursions there with their students. When these were expelled in 1767, the land went back to the Spanish king. Under the government of Bernardino Rivadavia , when Argentina was enjoying its golden age, workers and European immigrants settled there and the cities of Chacarita and Colegiales emerged.

The train station is one of the defining features and historical significance of the district.

Avenida Federico Lacroze

tourism

Colegiales is one of the smaller districts of Buenos Aires and is intersected by Avenida Federico Lacroze, the district's main shopping street. Avenida Alvarez Thomas offers a contrast with its row houses on one side and apartment blocks on the other. It is also the district boundary to Chacarita. General Paz Park attracts many visitors with its old trees, streams and an Andalusian-style patio . The Plaza Colegiales is known for its works of art, which were donated by the Argentine draftsman Joaquin Lavado, better known as Quino . Colegiales is also one of the greenest parts of the city.

Culture

A popular meeting place for the residents of the quarter was the “Club Social y Deportivo Colegiales”, where Roberto “Polaco” Goyeneche gave tango concerts decades ago. The first cinema ("Las Familias") of Buenos Aires was located in the district. More popular, however, was the “Argos” cinema, which also had a theater, a meeting room and a dance hall. Unfortunately, these institutions no longer exist, they have either closed or moved to Belgrano in the east . In Colegiales there are numerous cafés that are more reminiscent of billiard halls and attract night owls. The best known is certainly the “Cafe Argos” at the intersection of Avenidas Federico Lacroze and Alvarez Thomas. Former grain silos on Dorrego Street have been converted into expensive residential lofts that are inhabited by the city's higher earners. Until 1988, the popular Dorrego weekly market was also located on the corner of Avenidas Alvarez Thomas and Dorrego, where Portuguese, Italian, Spanish and Japanese-born Argentinians offered food. Today the city's largest flea market is held there, selling everything from African handicrafts to Chinese porcelain.
