Quino (born July 17, 1932 as Joaquín Salvador Lavado Tejón in Mendoza ; † September 30, 2020 there ) was an Argentine cartoonist . He became famous through the cartoon character Mafalda, which he created .

life and work

Joaquín Salvador Lavado was the son of Andalusian immigrants. As a child he was called "Quino" by everyone. From 1945 to 1948 he attended the art school ( Escuela de Bellas Artes ) in his hometown. After doing his military service, he moved to Buenos Aires. In 1954 his first comic strips appeared in the weekly newspaper Esto Es . Many of his cartoons are socially critical . A popular theme of quino was "the little man" who wants to defy the adversities of everyday life, but fails.

After the 1976 military coup , he left his home country and moved to Milan with his wife, Alicia Colombo. After the end of the military dictatorship, he returned to Argentina in 1983. At the beginning of November 2013, he stated that he could no longer draw because of his deteriorating eyesight.

Reception and awards

Quino drew a special edition of Mafalda for the children's aid organization UNICEF for the campaign for the rights of children and was awarded a prize at the Salone Internazionale dell'Umorismo in Bordighera in 1978 . In 1988 he received the Max and Moritz Prize of the International Comics Salon Erlangen for the Mafalda series as the best foreign comic strip. In 2014 he was awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize . In October 2014, an asteroid was named after him, (27178) Quino .
