(27178) Quino is an asteroid of the inner main belt that was discovered on January 21, 1999 as part of the OCA-DLR Asteroid Survey (ODAS), a project of the OCA (Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur) and the DLR ( German Center for Air - and space travel ), was discovered at the 90 cm Schmidt telescope of the French Observatoire de Calern ( IAU code 910). The asteroid had been sighted before, for example in November and December 1997 under the provisional designation 1997 WE 38 at the Lincoln Laboratory Experimental Test System in Socorro , New Mexico as part of the Lincoln Near Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) project.
The mean diameter of (27178) quino was calculated to be 3.201 km (± 0.094). With an albedo of 0.249 (± 0.037) it has a rather light surface.
Mean solar distance ( major semi-axis ), eccentricity and inclination of the orbit plane of the asteroid roughly resemble the orbital data of the members of the Flora family, a large group of asteroids named after (8) Flora . Asteroids of this family move in a 4: 9 orbital resonance with the planet Mars around the sun . The group is also called the Ariadne family, after the asteroid (43) Ariadne .
(27178) Quino was named on October 8, 2014 after the Argentinian cartoonist Joaquín Salvador Lavado Tejón (* 1932), who is known by the stage name Quino . Among his most famous cartoon characters belongs Mafalda .
