(8) Flora is an asteroid in the main asteroid belt discovered by John Russell Hind on October 18, 1847 as the eighth asteroid. The celestial body was named after Flora , the Roman goddess of blossom and spring.
Flora has an average diameter of around 147 km. It has a relatively bright surface with an albedo of 0.24 and an average brightness of 8.7 mag . During opposition , Flora can reach a brightness of 7.9 mag , making it one of the brightest asteroids in the night sky.
Flora is the namesake of the Flora family, a group of S-class asteroids in the inner main belt (2.15–2.35 AU).
