history

The newspaper first appeared on February 1, 1881. When it was founded, it was intended as a means of communication for the Liberal Party to control the city council. She remained associated with the party until 1887. From January 1, 1888, the first day of the world exhibition in Barcelona, it appeared as an independent daily newspaper with two editions, morning and afternoon.

During the Spanish Civil War, the newspaper was the most important organ of the Generalitat and (after the relocation of the seat of government to Barcelona) also of the Republican government. During this time, Antonio Machado, Bosch i Gimpera, Erenburg, Malraux, Max Aub and Ramón J. Sender wrote for La Vanguardia .

Headquarters of La Vanguardia (until 2004)

During the Franco dictatorship , La Vanguardia became the most widely read newspaper in Spain, ahead of the conservative-monarchist ABC . Politically, it adapted to the ideological guidelines of the regime and temporarily changed its name to La Vanguardia Española ('The Spanish Avant-garde'). In doing so, however, it mainly represented economically liberal positions and therefore defended the economic opening to the outside world. From the early 1970s she campaigned for political reform, but not for radical regime change. In the course of the transition , the newspaper dropped the name affix and primarily supported the decentralization of Spain and moderate Catalan nationalism. Since then it has lost readership to the newly founded Madrid daily newspapers El País and El Mundo as well as to ABC , but has remained the most widely read newspaper in Catalonia.

In April 2004, after around 100 years, the old headquarters at Carrer Pelai 28 were given up and a new editorial building was moved into in Avinguda Diagonal.

La Vanguardia is published in Spanish and since March 1, 2011 also in Catalan . The newspaper's columnists include a. Quim Monzó . The purchase price of the weekday editions in Spain is 1.30 euros, the Sunday edition costs 2.50 euros (as of 2019).
