history

The area that is now Chacarita and Colegiales used to belong to the Jesuits who had small farms there. The name is derived from the old Spanish "Chácara" ("Small Farm"). In 1767 they were expelled and Chacarita returned to the Spanish Crown. The only house from this period that still exists is today's Escuela Nacional de Educación Técnica No. 34 .

Today the district is mainly known for its cemetery, the 95 hectare Cementerio de la Chacarita , where the immortal tango singer Carlos Gardel found his final resting place. Right next to this cemetery are the British and German cemeteries, the Cementerio Alemán of Buenos Aires.

Chacarita also includes Los Andes Park , which opened in 1941, and Federico Lacroze train station .
