Villa del Parque is a district in the west of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . It has almost 60,000 inhabitants (as of 2001) on an area of 3.6 km² . Villa Parque belongs to Comuna C11.

history

The name of the district means "village in the park" and refers to a 100 hectare park (Parque del Oeste), which was initially created in the area.

During the presidency of Julio Argentino Roca an initiative was started to improve the training of farmers in order to be able to better sell Argentinean products on the world market. For this purpose it was decided in 1901 to build a model farm and an agricultural school. These were inaugurated in 1903. At that time there were about 50 blocks in the area and the settlement was called "Ciudad Feliz" (happy city). The place was later called Villa del Parque due to its proximity to the Parque Agronómico (formerly Parque del Oeste). On November 8, 1908, Villa del Parque became the official district of Buenos Aires.

The center of Villa Parque is now formed by the train station, which was inaugurated in 1907, the Plaza Aristóbulo del Valle and the Calle Cuenca.

The better-known figures of the district include the writer Julio Cortázar and the musicians Mariano Mores and Horacio Salgán .
