Liniers is a district on the western outskirts of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . It has a good 44,000 inhabitants (as of 2001) on an area of ​​5.4 km² . The population density is a good 8,000 inhabitants / km² and is thus considerably below the average of Buenos Aires with approx. 13,500 inhabitants per km².

Location and character

Liniers is bounded by the districts of Mataderos , Villa Luro and Versalles . It is an important traffic junction that connects the west of the greater Buenos Aires area with the city. The bus station there is the second most important in the city after Retiro .

Liniers is also a commercial sub-center of Buenos Aires with numerous retail outlets and street vendors. The more important buildings in Liniers include the “Estadio José Amalfitani” (football stadium) and the Church of San Cayetano. The district is also home to the Club Atlético Vélez Sársfield football club .

Liniers is named after Santiago de Liniers , a Spanish soldier with French roots who resisted the British invasion of the Río de la Plata.
