Location of La Paternal in Buenos Aires

La Paternal is a district in the center of Buenos Aires , the capital of Argentina . It is 2.4 km² and has 20,000 inhabitants (as of 2001). The population density is thus a good 8,300 inhabitants / km² and is thus below the Buenos Aires average, which is a good 13,000 inhabitants / km².

La Paternal was founded in 1904 and was named after the train station in the district. The district is predominantly residential and is built on with single and multi-family houses. The center of the district is formed by Avenida San Martín and Avenida Warnes . The football stadium is home to the Argentinos Juniors , where Diego Maradona began his career. Every year on July 12th, the district day ("Día del Barrio de La Paternal") is celebrated.

Location and traffic

The neighboring districts are: Agronomía , Chacarita , Villa Crespo , Villa General Miter , Villa Santa Rita and Caballito .

The best way to reach La Paternal is by taking the underground line B - either to the 'Federico Lacroze' stop or to 'Tronador'. La Paternal is - viewed from the center - behind the Chacarita cemetery (exit: underground station 'Federico Lacroze').

The district is geographically divided by a train route; it is called 'Metropolitano' - formerly 'San Martín'. The larger and better known part of the Barrios La Paternal lies between this train line and the 'Avenida San Martín'.

La Isla

The smaller and lesser known part of the borough is informally called La Isla (the island). This name is due to its isolated location: La Isla is bounded by two different train routes and on the two other sides by the Chacarita cemetery and the agricultural faculty (Agronomía) of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA).

La Isla has therefore remained rather untouched by the usual big city stress, noise, air pollution and petty crime. Many Porteños therefore also refer to this area as the original, the typical barrio , because it is the way it was known from earlier, when social and family life was relaxed and mainly took place on the street, and delinquent failures due to mutual social control in Limits could be kept.
