Antonio Devoto

description

Villa Devoto was named after Don Antonio Devoto , who was the owner of large parts of this district and a member of the social elite of Buenos Aires. Having helped the Italians during World War I , the king bestowed on him the title of Count .

Don Devoto built the largest manor house of its time, known as Palacio Devoto . Umberto I stayed here during his stay in Argentina. The building was built on Avenida Nacional and covered a total of 10,238  . It was decorated in bronze, silver and gold, with ironwork forged in Italy and Florentine mosaics .

Antonio Devoto died in 1916 before work on his home was finished. Since he had neither descendants nor could anyone be found who wanted to buy the eccentric house, the site was divided into building plots on which the houses of today's Villa Devoto were later built.

Today, Villa Devoto is a middle and upper class residential area with tree-lined streets. Part of Villa Devoto in particular, known as “Devoto R”, is popular with wealthier Porteños . The district is home to the “General Lamadrid” football club.
