Ole West (born May 22, 1953 in Wedel ) is a German painter .

Life

The son of the painter Gerhard West received his first professional drawing lessons from the painter Albert-Ludwig Glaser at the age of twelve . From 1975 to 1979 he studied at the Fachhochschule für Gestaltung in Hamburg, specializing in children's and young people's book illustration and painting . He finished his studies with a degree as a qualified designer . Shortly after completing his studies, the first drafts for large graphics or trade fair presentations were made for the NDR, among others . From 1984 to 2008, the now freelance painter and draftsman West lived on the East Frisian island of Norderney ; there he ran a painting school from 1985 to 1990. At the same time he created works in oil and watercolor painting and mixed media ; but also etchings were made during this time. Due to the increased professional activity on the mainland, he moved back to Wedel in 2008.

Works

West's motifs are largely maritime . In many variations he addresses ships, lighthouses and northern German landscapes. A striking stylistic feature is its material; Instead of canvas or paper, many of his maritime motifs are created on nautical chart excerpts , which thematically relate to the depicted motif. A large number of his works are known to a large group of people as prints or postcards .

Ole West's pictures are in public and private collections at home and abroad, such as the Trinity House, National Lighthouse Gentre in Penzance (United Kingdom), the German Maritime Museum , Bremerhaven and the Aquariom Museum, Delfzijl (Netherlands). Ole West is represented with his own collection of graphics in the Albert König Museum in Unterlüß and in the Integrated Comprehensive School in Wedel.
