action

US soldiers - including pilot Jake Preston - support the security forces of a South American state in the fight against the drug barons. As they fly to the scene in helicopters, they are attacked by a drug cartel attack helicopter and shot down. Preston struggles to save himself.

At headquarters it turns out that it was a (fictional) Scorpion attack helicopter that was flown by Eric Stoller. Eric Stoller is a mercenary pilot paid by the drug cartel for his services. Previous attempts to arrest Stoller have failed. In a survey, Preston states that if there is a helicopter that can hunt down Stoller, it is the AH-64 Apache .

The US Army then trains a special unit Apache pilots to fight the drug cartel. Jake Preston and his co-pilot also take part in the training and very soon turn out to be the best. However, it is noticeable during a training flight that Preston could see almost nothing during the monocle-assisted flight because of a cross- dominance . Billie Lee Guthrie - an ex-girlfriend and also a pilot - advises him to seek help from instructor Brad Little. He initially refuses, as Preston had left a very arrogant impression on Little at the beginning. Ultimately, however, he agrees to help Preston with his handicap and uses somewhat unconventional methods. Preston's skills with the monocle improve, and in private he and Guthrie get close again.

Finally the order comes. As soon as we arrive, the base camp comes under fire. Preston, Little, and the other pilots man their Apaches and fight the cartel from the air. Guthrie also flies on a Kiowa-class reconnaissance helicopter . Guthrie is discovered by Stoller while spying on the enemy forces. Preston is able to prevent Stoller from attacking them. Little manages to shoot down an enemy Saab 35 Draken fighter plane , but is then attacked by Stoller, which is why he crashes with his Apache. While Preston and Stoller have a dogfight, Guthrie ends up at Little's crash site and sees that he is still alive but his leg is broken. When trying to free Little, the two are attacked by another Draken. Little explains to Guthrie how to manually fire the Apacher missiles from the ground so Guthrie can shoot the Draken. Preston is pursued and shot at by Stoller in a dogfight, but sees a cliff as an opportunity to let his Apache sink quickly so that Stoller flies over it. This trick allows Preston to target Stoller and take him down.

Without further air support, breaking up the drug cartel is only a matter of form. Little is taken away in the rescue helicopter, and Preston and Guthrie fly back to their base together.

Reviews

Hal Hinson wrote in the Washington Post on May 25, 1990 that the film looked more like a video game than a movie. He speculated that the film should possibly strengthen the image of the US Army, as Top Gun - you fear neither death nor the devil improved the image of the US Navy , he described this attempt as a failure, and the film as primitive . Hinson only praised Nicolas Cage's screen presence. He noted that the film would help change Americans' enemy image after the end of the Cold War .

backgrounds

The film was in Tucson ( Arizona ), Mammoth (Arizona) and at Fort Hood ( Texas turned). It grossed approximately $ 14.76 million in US cinemas .

Trivia

The film title Airborne is actually misleading because the American paratroopers are called Airborne. At the center of the plot, however, is a combat helicopter unit.
