James Allen Preston (born November 13, 1932 in Washington, DC ) is an American actor .

Life

Preston attended Howard University in Washington. After making a few off-Broadway theater appearances in the late 1960s, Preston began his film and television career in the early 1970s. He had in his feature film debut William Bayer's only directorial effort, the drama Mississippi Summer at the side of Robert Earl Jones . This was followed by small roles in the Trans-America Express and two minutes of warning . In 1976, he received one of the leading roles in the short-lived sitcom Tell That Again Darling alongside Richard Crenna and Bernadette Peters , which was discontinued after 24 episodes. Between 1982 and 1985 he played the recurring role of Ozzie Cleveland in the crime series Hill Street Police Station, from 1986 to 1987 he played Leo Daltry in nine episodes of Dallas . Preston had major feature film roles in Remo - Unarmed and Dangerous and in the television film The Embers of Violence .

He was committed to roles as an authority figure from an early age, and typecasting increased with age . He was seen frequently as a judge, including in A Matter of Honor , The A-Team and Chicago Hope . Repeatedly he also played high-ranking officers, as in Air Force One and Airborne - Wings of Steel .

His marriage in 1957 had three children.
