action

The focus of the series is the ultra-modern Chicago Hope Hospital, where talented but also problematic doctors work. One of them is Dr. Jeffrey Geiger, a brilliant surgeon with emotional problems caused by his wife's mental health. Dr. Geiger's best friend is the neurosurgeon Dr. Aaron Shutt, suffering from his divorce and bad relationship with his father. The team also includes the talented heart surgeon Dr. Kate Austin, who is often offensive with her feminist attitude and her ambition and with Dr. Geiger competes for the post of chief surgeon.

The team at the hospital, which often has to struggle with financial problems due to its highly paid doctors and complex technical equipment, is held together by Dr. Phillip Watters, who is a fatherly friend, boss and colleague to his staff at the same time.

The doctors at Chicago Hope are not infrequently confronted with sensational as well as bizarre medical cases and cross many medical, ethical and legal boundaries in the process. The protagonists' private strokes of fate include divorces, close family deaths, kidnappings and legal charges. At the same time, however, deep relationships and feelings develop between some of the doctors, some of which lead to marriages.

Over the course of the 141 episodes, there were numerous fluctuations in the medical team.

background

The Chicago Hope series broke some taboos on US television. In a 1996 episode, for example, a teenager's bare breasts were shown. In addition, the character Dr. Jack McNeil (played by Mark Harmon) used the word "shit" for the first time on a US TV show in an episode.

Chicago Hope competed in the favor of US viewers with the popular hospital series Emergency Room and alluded to the rival in several episodes. For example, in an episode of Chicago Hope, an advertising film is made about the hospital that caricatures the opening credits of Emergency Room .

Mandy Patinkin left the series in the meantime for health reasons, as he had to undergo a corneal transplant and was no longer able to cope with the stress of a weekly series.

Chicago Hope was the first series in the US in 1998 to be broadcast regularly on HDTV .

DVD release

Seasons 1 to 6 have now been released in English on DVD.

Awards

The series received numerous awards. The actors Christine Lahti and Hector Elizondo were each awarded an Emmy for their achievements in the Chicago Hope series . Christine Lahti also received a Golden Globe in 1998 .
