Thomas Ellis Gibson (born July 3, 1962 in Charleston , South Carolina ) is an American actor and director . He gained fame in Germany primarily through his long-standing leading roles in Chicago Hope - Endstation Hope and Criminal Minds .

Life

Thomas Gibson first appeared in a theater at the age of ten. He studied at the College of Charleston , during which time he took part in the Alabama Shakespeare Festival . He later graduated from the renowned Juilliard School . In 1985 he made his theater debut in the play A map of the world by David Hare .

In the late 1980s, Gibson appeared in some television series such as Springfield Story . He played his first role in a movie alongside Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in In a Far Country (1992). This was followed by the leading role in the Canadian relationship film Love and Other Cruelties (1993) and a supporting role in Martin Scorsese's literary film Time of Innocence (1993) based on the novel by Edith Wharton .

From 1994 to 1997 he appeared in the television series Chicago Hope as Dr. Danny Nyland and was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for this role in 1997 . In the sitcom Dharma & Greg he played the role of Greg from 1997 to 2002, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 1999 and 2000 . In 1998 he was nominated for a Viewers for Quality Television Award and in 2000 for a Golden Satellite Award .

In 2000, Gibson played a leading role in the comedy Psycho Beach Party and a major supporting role in the comedy The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas , in which he appeared alongside Stephen Baldwin and Joan Collins . Gibson played the title role in the TV movie Monkey King (2001). Since 2005 he has appeared in the television series Criminal Minds as special agent Aaron Hotchner, in August 2016 his contract was terminated with immediate effect after he kicked producer and screenwriter Virgil Williams in the shin during an argument on the set . His character was written from the series.

Gibson was married to actress Christine Gibson from 1993 to 2014. He has three children.
