content
The series is about Dharma and Greg, who, despite their different homes and lifestyles, fall so deeply in love at their first meeting that they spontaneously marry in Reno . Dharma is a life artist who has adopted the life philosophy of her old hippie parents. Greg, on the other hand, comes from an industrial family, has attended the best universities and is a successful lawyer. The two can usually come to terms with their different views; however, the social gap between Greg's conservative parents and Dharma's hippie family regularly causes problems. The series is set in San Francisco .
The pilot episode
In the first episode, at the age of seven, Dharma meets Greg while getting off the subway. The two look each other in the eye and fall in love at this moment. But since Greg is in and Dharma is out of the path, there is no way to see each other again.
Twenty years later, under the same circumstances, the two meet again in the subway. Greg tries to contact Dharma again after the doors close. On the way to his office, Greg is very annoyed that he didn't get off in time to meet the pretty woman. But Dharma is already waiting for him in the office, her first words are: “Well, hello! What took you so long? ". Dharma immediately takes Greg to a Giants baseball game for the organ music and to get to know him better. Then they fly together to Reno just to have a blueberry cake, because they say they have the best of its kind there. You decide to get married on the same day so you don't run the risk of having to part again. The episode ends with the following dialogue. Greg: “What took you so long?” Dharma: “Shut up!” Greg: “No, you shut up!” (In the German dubbed version, formulated differently: “Why did it take so long?” Dharma: “Get away ! "Greg:" No, get out of here! ")
characters
main characters
- Dharma Freedom Finkelstein-Montgomery
Dharma, who was taught at home by her parents, is an optimist and seeks to see good in everything. She does not pursue a regulated profession in the traditional sense; she trains dogs during the day and works as a yoga teacher in the evening. Unlike her husband, Dharma gets excited about something quickly and often tries to infect him with her manner and attitude. Greg likes her spontaneity and openness, but also irritates him. Dharma was named by her parents after the teaching of Buddhism , the Dharma .
- Gregory "Greg" Clifford Montgomery
Greg graduated from Stanford and Harvard Universities and is a lawyer. Over the course of the series, he opens his own law firm and later works for Montgomery Industries , his father's company. Greg is a rather meticulous, closed and somewhat stuffy character who develops a tendency towards sarcasm over the course of the series. Although his marriage to Dharma has gone through some ups and downs, he never regrets marrying her.
- Katherine "Kitty" Montgomery
Greg's mother, Kitty, is a high society lady . She cannot do much with Dharma's lifestyle and social background, and with her snooty manner she sometimes makes life difficult for those around her. Kitty originally comes from a small town until her father founded a chain of petrol stations. Nevertheless, she has retained a certain kindness and sometimes shows a good heart. At the beginning of the first season, Kitty is consistently portrayed as a manipulative personality who has high expectations of her son. So she doesn't agree with Greg's wedding and is often at war with Dharma's parents. However, as the series progresses, this changes and she develops a closer relationship with her daughter-in-law, but not without losing her controlling nature.
- Edward "Ed" Montgomery
Greg's father Edward is an entrepreneur and, unlike his wife Kitty, he doesn't like high society and Kitty's charity events . He prefers to drink a good scotch , which he does more often the more angry he is with his wife. He remains calm even in exciting situations. His hobbies include golf and sailing. in the course of the series he develops a strange friendship with Dharma's father Larry.
- Abigail "Abby" Kathleen O'Neil-Finkelstein
Dharma's mother Abby O'Neil, who studied ornithology and ethnology , is a person in need of harmony and lives in harmony with mother earth . In contrast to Greg, she also has no problem discussing sexual issues with Dharma in his presence. She is also a committed vegetarian and animal rights activist. In contrast to Larry, she immediately accepts Greg as Dharma's husband and also takes Greg's parents into her heart. In season 3, episode 8, after 30 years of “wild hippie marriage”, she finally marries Larry and henceforth bears the name O'Neil-Finkelstein. In season 4, Abby gives birth to a son after initially thinking she was going through menopause if she missed her menstrual period .
- Myron Lawrence "Larry" Finkelstein
Larry is Dharma's father and often has memory gaps due to regular cannabis use. He is paranoid , rejects authorities and state power and is always open to various conspiracy theories . He thus stereotypes the typical 1960s radical. He also believes he is being persecuted by the FBI , which he is not (his family lets him believe because it makes him proud). At the same time, much to the displeasure of his wife, he enjoys the luxurious life when he is with Greg's parents. His vegetarianism is only lip service as he loves to eat meat but tries to keep it a secret from Abby. Larry is a Jew.
- Jane Deaux-Cavanaugh
Jane Deaux is Dharma's best friend; the two get to know each other when Dharma calls total strangers to "meet new people". She goes through life just as "easily" as Dharma and is always ready to participate in a public craze. She adopts the name Cavanaugh when she marries Pete in season 2 because they both don't want to be alone on Valentine's Day. However, they want to get a divorce after six weeks, which will only happen in the fourth season.
- Peter "Pete" James Cavanaugh
Pete is Greg's work colleague and best friend. In contrast to Harvard graduate Greg, Pete studied law in the Caribbean at the Bob Marley School of Law and is otherwise the opposite of a competent and successful lawyer and workaholic . Pete is generally a superficial guy, also when it comes to his more sexually motivated relationship with women. So the marriage to Jane is short-lived. He lives in an almost empty apartment with a massage chair , a large TV, various porn videos and his cat, which symbolizes his whole life very well.
Minor characters
- Marcie (Helen Greenberg): A friend of Dharma who has very little self-esteem and tends to apologize for something in a low voice at every opportunity.
- Marlene ( Yeardley Smith ): Greg's secretary, hired by him for his law firm after working for him at Greg's former employer, the US Justice Department. Marlene is easily offended and is rarely in a good mood.
- Celia ( Lillian Hurst ): The Montgomery Hispanic maid who also suffers from Kitty's way. Dharma gets along well with her and often exchanges gossip with her. Larry, on the other hand, sees Celia as suppressed and emphasizes this quite often in her presence. Like Greg, Celia is prone to sarcasm.
When Kitty and Edward go away, Celia and her husband move into their house and pretend it is theirs. You then even invite friends.
- Susan (Susan Chuang): An Asian friend of Dharma at the community center.
