Grace (Original title: Grace Under Fire ) is an American television series that was broadcast from 1993 to 1998 on the American television station ABC . In Germany it was broadcast on ProSieben from 1995 to 1998 . The main role of the eponymous single mother and dry alcoholic Grace Kelly (not to be confused with the actress of the same name , but a deliberate allusion to the same, see Trivia ) played the American comedian Brett Butler . The show begins after the main character divorced her husband , an alcoholic who abused her , after eight years of marriage in an attempt to start a new life and keep her children from making the same mistakes as her. The series was produced by Carsey Werner International, known for productions such as Die Bill Cosby Show , Roseanne , Cybill , Hinterm Mond immediately left and The Wild Seventies .

In the USA, the series had the highest ratings of the new comedy series at the time . Mainly the series was about the life of Grace, who raised three children all by herself. To save her from a final nervous breakdown , her neighbors Wade and Nadine and the local pharmacist Russel Norton stood by her side.

The series was nominated for three Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress and Best Series .

The series' producers and writers changed steadily over the five seasons. Brett Butler successfully fought for more creative control over the show and its role. These disputes resulted in the dismissal of the show's creator and executive producer , Chuck Lorre , from production. As with Cybill and Roseanne , the conflicts behind the scenes were well known. Butler's "battle" for creative control has been labeled "difficult" behavior by the press. It was alleged that a man who behaved similarly would be considered "determined". Casting changes, behind-the-scenes feuds, and Butler's personal problems ultimately led to the cessation of production in February 1998. The last episode aired in the USA on February 17, 1998, and in Germany on November 7, 2001.

Trivia

The role of Nadine was originally offered to Sheila McCarthy, but she declined to avoid having to commute between Los Angeles and Toronto.

Grace Kelly isn't the only character named after one of the famous Kellys in the entertainment industry. In her relatives by marriage there are the names Jean Kelly ( homophone to Gene Kelly ), Emmet Kelly and DeForest Kelly.

Jean Stapleton (Edith from All in the Family ) was nominated for an Emmy in the category guest actress in 1995 for her portrayal of Aunt Vivian in the episode A Great Aunt . Diane Ladd had been nominated in the same category for her role as Louise Burdett in the episode Sisterly Love the year before .
