action

Christy Plunkett, a single mother, works as a waitress in a restaurant and has an affair with her boss Gabriel. She was addicted to alcohol and other drugs , so she attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings . Her mother Bonnie is fighting the same problems. The relationship between the two is strained as Christy accuses them of never being there for them in her childhood. Christy's daughter Violet, who was born when Christy was 16 years old, is now pregnant by Luke at the same age. Christy also has a younger son named Roscoe from her ex-husband Baxter, a lovable for-good and stoner. The series evolves over time and addresses problematic issues such as alcoholism , teenage pregnancy , cancer , homelessness , gambling addiction , domestic violence , death, suicide , drug addiction, relapse, and overdose. But there is also positive content, such as Christy's training as a lawyer, or the constant success of staying dry. Despite all the adversities, both mothers always manage to fall on their feet and move forward in life.

From season 3, the focus was more on Christy, Bonnie and their group of Alcoholics Anonymous and their daily worries, while the scenes with Christy's family were initially significantly reduced, then removed entirely, apart from a few guest appearances; scenes that are set in the restaurant are almost completely absent. In the course of time Bonnie finds a steady partner, the wheelchair-sitting ex-stuntman Adam, Christy completes her school leaving certificate and starts studying law.

characters

Christy Plunkett

Christy is a single mom who has been dry for a year at the start of the series but still struggling with gambling addiction and occasional relapses into alcohol addiction. Now that she is dry, she strives to be a good example to her son Roscoe and to regain the trust of her daughter Violet. In addition, she tries to improve the complicated relationship with her mother Bonnie. Bonnie never used to be able to live up to her role as a mother because she preferred to go out drinking rather than looking after her daughter. Christy later discovers that her biological father left her mother on Christmas Eve, the day Christy was born, and is now married to another woman. He is the father of two sons and runs a car repair shop.

Bonnie Plunkett

Christy's mother is a joyful, if cynical, addict who is content with her life today. She is desperate to regain her daughter's love and trust as she never cared for her adequately when Christy was a child. As a single mother, she preferred to party and drink rather than stay home. With time and therapy, Bonnie managed to find the right balance and now she wants to catch up and reveal her past to Christy, including who her real father is, where he lives, and her previous career as a drug dealer.

Violet Plunkett

Violet is Christy's daughter and the older half-sister of Roscoe. Violet is hardworking, smart, and confident. She is annoyed that her mother, who never had time to take care of Violet and her brother, does not always find time for them both now that she is dry. After becoming pregnant by her boyfriend Luke, Violet makes the decision to put her baby up for adoption. She wants to prevent the past of her mother and grandmother from repeating itself in her own life: early unwanted pregnancy and subsequent abuse of alcohol and / or other drugs. She also wants to give her unborn child a better childhood. During season two, after a brief downward spiral of bad behavior, Violet falls in love with Gregory Munshnick, a much older psychology professor at her university, but he breaks the engagement when she relapses.

Gabriel

Gabriel is the manager of the restaurant where Christy works. Married to a dominant woman who scares him, he has an affair with Christy that she later ends. But Gabriel, himself often desperate, tries to win Christy back. They get back together in season two when Christy succeeds Gabriel as manager of the restaurant. He is a hardworking and competent manager; But his subordinates, chief Rudy in particular, often point out his limits to him.

Baxter

Baxter is Christy's ex-husband and the father of Roscoe. Sweet and charming, but very unstable, he is unable to maintain a serious relationship or steady job for much longer than a month. He loves the simple life and does a lot of crooked tours to make money. Despite his weaknesses, he is a loving father who is there for his son. During Season 2, under the influence of his wealthy new girlfriend Candace, Baxter gives up on his casual path and becomes a car salesman for Candace's father's company.

Chef Rudy

He's the head chef at the restaurant where Christy works as a waitress. Rudy is a dominant and difficult person who is superior in relationships with others. He is boastful and arrogant, he often yells at his subordinates for no reason and does not hesitate to humiliate anyone who opposes him. His past is mysterious; he has a brief affair with Bonnie that shows that he is a bisexual fetishist with expensive tastes and extravagant hobbies who likes to steal food from his own restaurant. He also deals in illegal drugs and is addicted to gambling.

hatch

Luke is a young student who loves life and adventure. He had known Violet for a little over a year when she became pregnant. Luke is a lovable idiot who often smokes marijuana . But he keeps trying to prove to Christy that he's not as crazy as it seems. Apparently he really loves Violet, wants to stay with her and support her during her pregnancy. He is closer to Christy than to his own parents, perhaps because his parents are religious extremists with whom he has nothing in common.

Roscoe Plunkett

Roscoe is Christy's son of Baxter and half-brother of Violet.

Marjorie Amstrong

An old friend, enemy, and friend again of Bonnie who Christy meets at Alcoholics Anonymous and who becomes her good friend. She has had many problems with alcohol and other drugs in the past, and she faces another vital threat as the series progresses: she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Jill Kendall

A newer Alcoholics Anonymous member that Christy has mentored. Jill is a very wealthy lady of high society.

Wendy Harris

Also a participant in the women's meetings, who often reacts very emotionally. She is a nurse and a member of Mensa International .

Adam Janikowski

Bonnie's new love, a wheelchair-bound ex-stuntman whom she met over the phone after dialing the wrong number.
