Mensa International is an international umbrella organization of associations for people with high intelligence quotients . Founded in 1946, the non-profit organization is the largest, oldest and best-known of its kind in the world. The association is based in Caythorpe , Lincolnshire, UK.

The aim of the association is to promote the exchange between highly intelligent people , to research the nature of intelligence and to use it for the benefit of humanity. The association takes care not to represent an opinion and has no ideological or political orientation.

The name Mensa ( Latin pronunciation : [ meːnsa ]) comes from Latin and means “ table ”, which is also symbolized in the organization's logo. The originally intended name Mens (Latin for spirit) was discarded by the founders due to the ambiguity in the English language.

Comparable organizations with even higher admission criteria are Intertel , the Triple Nine Society , the ISPE and the Prometheus Society .

Origin and structure

The association was founded in Great Britain in 1946 by the Australian Roland Berrill and the Englishman Lancelot Ware , but above all, under the direction of Victor Serebriakoff, it has expanded into a global organization and has over 133,000 members from 100 countries worldwide (October 2016) . Mensa International is the umbrella organization for over 40 regional associations; it only accepts people as individual members from those countries that do not have their own national association.

aims

“Mensa's purposes are to identify and foster human intelligence for the benefit of humanity; to encourage research in the nature, characteristics, and uses of intelligence; and to provide a stimulating intellectual and social environment for its members. "

“The goals of Mensa are to recognize and promote human intelligence for the benefit of mankind, to support research on the nature, properties and use of intelligence, and to provide members with an intellectually and socially stimulating environment. "

admission

If you want to become a member, you have to prove an IQ in a current intelligence test that is higher than that of 98% of the population in your country of origin. In the tests customary in German-speaking countries, this corresponds to a value of at least IQ 130 with a standard deviation of 15 or (more rarely) IQ 132 with a standard deviation of 16 (percentile rank 97.7 in each case). It makes sense to indicate the percentile rank, because if the standard deviation differs, the IQ values of the test results (with the same percentile rank) differ. The cafeteria offers regular group tests. Due to the relatively low price, these are also used by people who do not become members of the cafeteria but want to take an IQ test. In addition to these group tests, Mensa also accepts tests carried out by recognized psychologists.
