Gert Mittring (born May 26, 1966 in Stuttgart ) is a German arithmetic artist . He broke several world records in mental arithmetic , for which he received entries in the Guinness Book of Records .

Life and work

Mittring already stood out as a child with his mathematical talent . He passed his Abitur with a grade of 3.7. Gert Mittring is a computer scientist, doctor of education and doctor of psychology. Mittring works as a freelance scientist in highly gifted diagnostics - formerly together with Ida Fleiß (1935–2010) - as well as in psychological test theory and test development. As an algorithm developer and talent researcher with a particular interest in brain research , he has made numerous appearances on German television. Mittring is often a guest in programs on RTL with Günther Jauch , whose production company I & U he advises on mathematical questions and on the subject of giftedness. Mittring is the author of six publications.

In recognition of his commitment, Mittring was appointed Mathematics Ambassador by the then Federal Minister of Education, Annette Schavan . Mittring held this position in the Year of Mathematics 2008. Mittring is also the Mathematics Ambassador of the Rechnen Foundation. As such, he directed the world's first mental arithmetic world championship for schoolchildren in Nuremberg in 2008 under Schavan's patronage. In 2009 the grandmaster headed the first German mental arithmetic championship in Cologne. In 2011 he headed both the second World Mental Arithmetic Championship for schoolchildren in Nuremberg and the second German Mental Arithmetic Championship in Münster. In April 2012 Mittring organized the mental arithmetic Easter workshop “number magician” in Münster, which was followed in October 2012 by the third mental arithmetic world championship for schoolchildren.

Mittring is a member of the European Council for High Ability (ECHA) and the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children (WCGTC), as well as numerous other working groups that deal with gifted research and talent development. He is also the national trainer of the “KIT-Club e. V. “for mathematics / arithmetic / mental arithmetic and board member of Intertel .

Titles and records

At the Psychological Institute of the University of Bonn , Jürgen Bredenkamp and his team investigated and documented Mittring's first world record of extracting the 13th root from a hundred-digit number in 13.3 seconds in the head and without aids as part of a research project. He also managed to pull the 137th root out of a thousand-digit number in his head. He can tell within a few seconds on which day of the week a certain date falls.

Mittring won the gold medal in mental arithmetic nine times in a row (2004–2012) at the Mind Sports Olympiad and was awarded the title of grand master in mental arithmetic. In 2013 he took second place. In 2014 and 2015 he secured the title again and also won gold both times in the Mental Calculation Blitz competition .

At the 2nd mental arithmetic world championship in Gießen in 2006 he took third place.

On May 4, 2016, under the supervision of Andreas Steiger, lecturer at ETH Zurich, he broke the world record in root extraction. In his head, Mittring calculated the 89247th root of a million-digit number within 6 minutes and 1.4 seconds. The result: 160,289,883,449. Andreas Steiger then stated: "That is the greatest achievement anyone has ever done in pulling roots in their heads."
