Intertel (formerly International Legion of Intelligence ) is a highly gifted association for people who achieve a score in an IQ test that indicates a higher intelligence than that of 99% of the population. This corresponds to an IQ of 135 or more on the Wechsler scale used in Germany (statistical average 100, standard deviation 15).

history

The association was founded in 1966 by the American Ralph E. Haines, who, like the cafeteria founders Roland Berrill and Lancelot Ware twenty years earlier, wanted to create an association that was tailored to the special needs of the gifted and, apart from a certain IQ, has no admission restrictions . "Intertel" is derived from the name "International Legion of Intelligence" and its members refer to themselves as "ILIans".

Intertel is organized in eight geographical regions, five of which exclusively comprise states of the USA , and two further include states of the USA and eastern and western Canada. "Region VI" includes the rest of the world under the region name "International".

There are around 1900 members worldwide (as of 2019) in over 30 countries, including more than 50 members in German-speaking countries.

Known members

classification

Intertel is twice as selective in its admission requirements (admission 1%) than the better-known and larger club Mensa (admission 2%). After this it is the second oldest and, after the cafeteria, the International High IQ Society (approval 5%) and the Triple Nine Society (approval 0.1%), the fourth largest highly gifted association in the world.
