Robert Edward "Bobby" Czyz (born February 10, 1962 in Wanaque , New Jersey ) is a retired American boxer and commentator.

career

Czyz, whose last name comes from his Polish ancestors, was very lucky as an amateur when the US national team of which he was a member crashed by plane in Poland in 1980 , but he happened to be absent from the plane a week earlier due to a traffic accident.

He began his professional career in 1980 as a middleweight, defeated the Syrian southpaw Mustafa Hamsho in 1982 and rose to the light heavyweight division. On September 6, 1986, he challenged the Olympic champion Slobodan Kačar for the IBF title in Las Vegas and won in the fifth round. Against Charles Williams he managed a knockdown in October 1987, but had to give up the fight due to a laceration in the eye in the eighth round and so lost the belt in his fourth defense of the title. He was subsequently defeated by Dennis Andries on points and also lost in 1989 in two title fights against Virgil Hill ( WBA ) and in a rematch to Charles Williams.

In 1990 he beat Andrew Maynard, the second undefeated Olympic champion, prematurely. Shortly thereafter, he rose to the cruiserweight division , where he won the WBA title against Robert Daniels on March 8, 1991. After a few title defenses, he gave up the belt because he did not want to box against Orlin Norris, who is regarded as a cruiser . In August 1994 he was defeated by the Nigerian David Izeqwire.

Czyz then boxed a few more times in the heavyweight division, but had no chance against Evander Holyfield and Corrie Sanders and lost each time prematurely.

Today he works as a commentator for the US pay TV channel Showtime .

Czyz is known for his high IQ, when the first test of his was published, he said ironically: "I am the incarnation of the antithesis of the stereotypical boxer." He is also a cafeteria member .
