The Jakobstreppe (also called Jakobsleiter or Himmelsleiter ) is the longest straight open staircase in Wuppertal .

Building description

155 steps connecting them in the district Elberfeld-West , the Friedrich-Ebert-Straße (in this stretch of road as a national road 7 ) with the Nützenberger road on the Nützenberg . It got its name after the first name of the builder Jakob Wilhelm Haarhaus , who was the owner of the Nützenberg.

history

It was given its official name in the year of construction on April 26, 1887 and will be listed as an architectural monument in the list of monuments of the city of Wuppertal from February 11, 2009 .

In January 2009 it was blocked for the time being because frost damage had damaged the stairs. Due to the poor budget situation in the city, renovation was postponed for the time being; in June 2011, the cost of renovation is estimated at 600,000 euros. Originally, renovation was planned for 2015 at the latest, but the city pushed the renovation date to mid-2017 as early as 2014. This is due to the fact that, in addition to the money, there was also a lack of staff to restore the staircase in accordance with heritage protection. In 2015, a permanent fence was installed at the top of the stairs, which replaced the old temporary barrier. The costs for this were around 2400 euros.

In May 2017, a possible start of repairs was announced in 2020 at the earliest, as other structures, especially bridges, would have priority for repairs. The fact that the Jakobstreppe, like many other stairs in Wuppertal, is connected to the walls of the neighboring houses, increases the complexity of the statics to be renovated and thus the renovation effort.

With the removal of the overgrown green, further decay was slowed down for the time being.
