Dennis Andries (born November 5, 1953 in Georgetown , Guyana ) is a former world boxing champion from Guyana.

Career

In 1978 the hard-hitting Andries began his professional career in Great Britain, which for years did not move as he lost several times to unknown opponents in the first few years of his career. He had a mixed record of 17-6-1 when he won the British light heavyweight championship in 1983. He successfully defended it twice against Tom Collins, who had beaten him at the beginning of his career and later became European champion, and began a winning streak that ended on April 30, 1986 in winning the WBC title against the not particularly respected American JB Williamson culminated in London .

In March 1987 he met one of the greats in boxing history, Thomas Hearns . Hearns was actually fighting middleweight at that time, but won almost every round against Andries and won by technical knockout in the tenth round. Andries got good reviews for his courageous performance, the fight was visually quite balanced.

In 1988 he was able to defeat the respected ex-world champion Bobby Czyz on points in his home state New Jersey . On February 21, 1989, at the age of 35, he won the vacant WBC title back against the American Tony Willis and then met the undefeated, powerful Australian Jeff Harding , who had a decisive influence on his career. In a tough fight in Atlantic City , he lost in the twelfth and final round on points by a technical knockout.

After two development fights, he traveled to Australia for the rematch the following year and won against Harding by knockout. He then knocked out an opponent with Sergio Merani, who later went over time against Virgil Hill and only lost against Dariusz Michalczewski through a technical decision, which underscores Andries' clout. In the decisive battle he lost to Harding in London in September 1991 just on points.

Then he could not bring the light heavyweight limit and rose to cruiserweight. Here he succeeded with the early win against Crawford Ashley yet another respectable success, but he had grown too old and was defeated by opponents like the Pole Przemysław Saleta . After a loss to Johnny Nelson in December 1996, he ended his career.
