Luca Giacomo Bortoli

Luca Giacomo Bortoli (born July 2, 1934 ) is an Italian restaurateur living in Giessen .

He has been one of the first Italian restaurateurs in Hesse since the 1950s . For many years he leased 18 Italian restaurants across Germany. He is co-founder of the " Association of Italian Restaurateurs in Germany " (Ciao Italia, founded in 1982), until 1988 he was the first chairman of the regional association of Hesse, from 1989 to 1997 he was president of the entire association, to which around 30,000 Italian restaurants in the Federal Republic belong he honorary president.

Bortoli has made a special contribution to the integration of Italian guest workers. He was always the point of contact for his compatriots, organized regular meetings, helped with finding accommodation and accompanied those seeking help with visits to the authorities.

Because of his services to the integration of people and the cultural exchange between Italy and Germany, he was awarded the Wilhelm Leuschner Medal in 2006, the highest honor in the state of Hesse .
