Jeff Harding (born February 5, 1965 in Sydney ) is a retired Australian boxer .

amateur

Harding became Australian middleweight champions in 1984 and 1985. In 1985 he won the Melbourne Oceania Championship in this weight class . In 1986 he finished second at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh and took part in the Amateur World Championships in Reno , where he was eliminated in the preliminary round.

Professional career

The beefy and powerful attack boxer Harding turned professional in his native Australia in 1986. He won all his build-up fights, for example against Nestor Giovannini (points win) and after only 14 professional fights got a title fight at the WBC Association against Dennis Andries , which he defeated on June 24, 1989 in the USA by technical knockout in the twelfth round.

After two title defenses against Tom Collins and once again Giovanini (this time KO) Harding lost on July 28, 1990 the title in the rematch with Andries, which he won by knockout in round seven.

After three development fights, including against David Vedder, it came on September 11, 1991 in London to the decisive battle against Andries in England. Again the challenger won, this time on points.

He defended against the former world title holder in the super middleweight division Christophe Tiozzo (the older brother of Fabrice Tiozzo ) in France and finally won against him prematurely after certain initial problems. Thereupon he let himself be challenged again by David Vedder (balance 15-10). Around this time, Henry Maske and Dariusz Michalczewski won their titles, Maske against Charles Williams , the highest rated by Ring Magazine , Michalczewski against the number four Leeonzer Barber . Virgil Hill was considered number two at the time, Harding number three in the light heavyweight division.

After the Vedder fight, Harding was no longer in the mood to box and remained inactive. He finally lost his title on July 23, 1994 on points against the 37-year-old former light middleweight Mike McCallum . He then ended his career at the age of 29.
