Professional career

Barber made his professional sport debut on December 10, 1986 in Belvoir , USA against fellow countryman Lynn Robinson . He defeated this by knockout in the first round.

On May 9, 1991 he fought against Tom Elton Collins for the newly founded world association WBO title. Previously, he was able to defeat ten other opponents, five of them by knockout. The fight took place in Yorkshire , Great Britain . Barber was superior to Collins and brought him down three times in the sixth round, which is why he lost to a technical knockout. Barber defended his title in WBO fights eight times, including against Anthony Hembrick , Andrea Magi and Nicky Piper .

After the Nicky Piper fight, Dariusz Michalczewski was selected as the mandatory challenger. The fight took place on September 10, 1994 in Alsterdorf , Germany . Michalszewski went into the ring as a clear outsider, but was superior to Barber in the fight, so that he won the title. With his defeat, Barber was forced to defeat Michalczewski in a rematch. He first fought against Sajad Abdul Azzis and Earl Niles and won both fights. He suffered his second defeat against Ramón Garbey , who knocked him down three times in the ninth round. Shortly thereafter, he announced his retirement from boxing.

In 2004 he tried a comeback. He wanted to challenge the reigning World Champion of the WBO, Zsolt Erdei . But it didn't get that far. His official last fight, which he lost by giving up in the eighth round, was against Sajad Abdul Azzis, from whom he was knocked down five times in the eight rounds of combat. Shortly afterwards, he announced that he would be stepping back from active boxing for good.
