Nicky Piper (* 5. May 1966 in Cardiff , Wales ) is a former boxer in light heavyweight . Although he never won one of the titles of the major boxing associations, he catapulted himself into the spotlight with fights against well-known opponents such as Leeonzer Barber , Noel Magee, Nigel Benn and Dariusz Michalczewski . Piper was allowed to fight twice for the title of the WBO and once for the title of the WBA and the national title of the Commonwealth, but won none of these fights.

Professional career

Little is known about Piper's amateur career. He played his first professional fight against Kevin Roper in Afan Lido. He won the fight by knockout in the 2nd round. After three more development fights, two of which ended by knockout, he denied a fight against Maurice Core. One judge scored the fight in Piper's favor, while the other scored the fight for Core and the latter marked the fight as a tie. After this fight, Piper fought mostly in England . After he was able to win six development fights, all by knockout, he was allowed to fight against former cruiserweight champion Carl Thompson .

He suffered his first defeat against Thompson. Piper, who was largely able to keep Thompson at a distance during the fight, had to go down in favor of Thompson after several strong head hits. After he was able to get up again, Thompson sent him again violently to the ground, which is why Piper was taken out of the fight by the referee and Thompson won by TKO.

Piper was able to win another six build-up fights, three of them by knockout. Against Frank Eubank, with whom he fought for the British middelweight title, Piper was weak and was only able to dominate the fight thanks to successful counter attacks. Only three fights later, Piper fought again for the British middelweight title, this time against Johnny Melfah. In contrast to the fight against Eubank, Piper was strong and knocked Melfah down three times in round five.

Piper fought his first famous fight against the American Nigel Benn for the title of the WBC , one of the four world associations. Although Piper went into battle as an outsider, he was strong against Benn. He brought the reigning WBC world champion even more often on the verge of defeat, but the stronger hits and mostly clean hits of the defending champion brought the ring doctor to take the heavily marked Piper out of the fight.

After four more fights, three of which ended victorious and one drawn, he fought against the reigning title holder of the WBO , Leeonzer Barber . Piper was also strong against Barber, but already after the first rounds the assumption was confirmed that Piper would not leave the fight victorious. Barber knocked Piper down once in round five and three times in round nine and won by TKO.

After a victorious battle against Charles Oliver, Piper suffered another defeat by Crawford Ashley in a battle for the National Commonwealth Title. After a six-fight streak of victories, Piper played the most famous fight of his career.

He fought against the undefeated world champion of the WBO , WBA and IBF Dariusz Michalczewski , who had previously defeated Leeonzer Barber. Piper had no chance and tried to save himself from a knockout defeat by difficult clinging. But this came about. Michalczewski sent Piper down once in the fourth round, once in the sixth round and three times in the ninth round, which is why Piper lost to TKO. After this defeat, Piper officially retired from boxing.
